Some Great Tune Books for Jams

Master fiddler, Gordon Stobbe, teaches, mentors and performs across Canada and in the Canadian North.  His 3-volume “Canadian Old-Time Fiddle Hits” books are considered one of the best collections of Canadian fiddle tunes.  He has published a number of other tune and instructional books for fiddlers.  Some books are available in ‘print’ form and others in ‘eBook’ form. 

As a performer, Gordon has recorded a number of CDs & DVDs.  Well worth checking out.

Neal Hellman, nationally acclaimed performer and teacher of the mountain dulcimer, has been active in performing, writing, teaching, and recording acoustic music for the past 30 years. 

He is the author of many books on the Appalachian dulcimer, including Celtic Songs & Slow Airs for Mountain Dulcimer, The Dulcimer Chord Book,The Hal Leonard Dulcimer Method, and Music of the World for Mountain Dulcimer.      

For flat pick guitar and mandolins, nothing beats the Steve Kaufman '4-Hour Workout' Series.  Also available for banjo (3-finger style) and bass.  Beautifully laid out, easy to follow and most important, he stays true to the original versions of these classic tunes.  Books come with CDs

If you're familiar with music 'Fake Books' , you'll love this book.  200 of the most popular Bluegrass, Old Time, Country and Gospel standards, complete with words and music, in one wire-bound book!

The book come either with CDs or online access to audio files of all the tunes.   This is a great resource at jams.  The book is published in different editions (Fiddle; Guitar, Bass, Mandolin and Dobro). 

 

Note: If you just want the standard musical notation and don't need the  tablature; order the Fiddle edition.  Since there is no tablature, they type is much larger and easier to read.

Larry Conger is a player and teacher of the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer.

Larry has been involved with music as a vocation for over 35 years. Over the years, he has published a number of great tune and instructional books.  They include: Classical, Hymns & Spirituals, Civil War-era tunes, Christmas tunes and flat-picking arrangements of fiddle tunes. Several of his tune books are geared for duets: Hammered & Mountain Dulcimer Duets; Baritone & Standard Mountain Dulcimer Duets

For mountain dulcimers Stephen Seifert has a great collection to get you started.    Very simply laid out and easy to follow.  These 'Join the Jam' books get you into instrument quickly and gives you the confidence to 'join the jam'  As you progress, Stephen has more complex tune books to help you raise your playing ability.  Books come with CDs

This book provides a large collection of of the tunes played in today’s jam sessions.  Great as a help during a jam or as a resource to learn jam tunes. 

Unique to this book:  Twenty-nine of the tunes are traditionally played in G or A.  Many of these have be adapted by dulcimer players in the key of D.  In these cases, Dave has included an arrangement in D and a second arrangement in either G or A.   This will allow dulcimer player to be more comfortable playing with fiddles, banjos, and other old-time instruments.  Book comes with CDs
